Mackenzie Bessner- Arrest of more than 40 mobsters

On August 4, 2016, over 40 suspected Mafia members were arrested on multiple charges. Most of the crimes were located in New York City but arrests were made in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Florida and Connecticut. Although the Mafia is not what it used to be, this crackdown shows that deep roots still remain. Those who were arrested were tied with four of New York's major family names: Genovese, Gambino, Luchese, and Bonanno. The crimes they were committed of included extortion, arson, health care fraud, credit card fraud and assault.  Diego Rodriguez, head of of the FBI's New York office, says that "this reads like an old school mafia novel, where extortion, illegal gambling, arson and threats to 'whack' someone are carried out along with some modern-day crimes."

I believe this current event related back to the late 19th century and early 20th century. The American Mafia were an extremely powerful, highly organized and deadly Italian-American criminal society. The mafia was brought into the United States by Italian immigrants. During the 1920's, Italian-American gangs entered the liquor business and found themselves as sophisticated criminals. They became skilled at smuggling, bribing police and other things.

  1. wow! its amazing how dangerous this world can really be. Its also scary to think that people are sill participating in Mafia organizations in locations that are heavily populated like New York City and Florida.

  2. Think of the mob as a tumor. You can cut out the majority of the tumor, like in this case, but if there is just a little bit of cancerous tissue left it'll regrow. thats how the mob has been working for ages. This doesn't mean the end of anything, unfortunately.

  3. I found this article really interesting! It's scary seeing that they're still active, and it's a real problem. I didn't realize the Mafia organizations are still a big issue, and I wonder what will become of it in the future.

  4. There are several Mafia types of organized crime that still exist and are as real as before but it is reassuring to see that our FBI and police are fighting the fight to keep us safe.
