San Diego Border Patrol seizes $3 million
Earlier this week, the Californian San Diego border patrol gained possession of over $3 million. This was one of the largest seizes in US history. The money was captured from two men who were trying to smuggle the cash over the border from California to Mexico. California, according to officials, is a money laundering state harboring criminals and the Mexican cartel. Most money confiscated from the Mexican cartel are money gained or being transferred in exchange for large drug deals such heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. The capture of that large of a sum of money caused concern for the number of smugglers that get past the border. However, some officials were not surprised as Los Amgeles is known as the "epicenter" of the nation for money laundering by international cartels, federal officials said in 2014, after raiding businesses and seizing an estimated $100 million in cash and from banks around the world. While there is still a lot of smuggling and laundering going on throughout the Americas, the number has gotten increasingly lower.
This particular article was written by journalist Steve Visser on Sunday, August 28 for CNN. Mr Visser, based on his standpoint of the article, is against money laundering and supports the border patrol and the job they do to catch criminals. Because this article was produced in the US, the reporter might be biased to the subject and place more support within the US side. I agree with Mr Steve Visser because without precautions being taken at the border, many objects, people, or weapons could be smuggled in for ransom or cash. I previously knew that there have been squirmishes at the border and many things have been smuggled in. However, I did not know how many precautions were taken to protect the US and it makes me believe that our country is well protected. The article seems to take on a positive vibe for its audience and readers due to the fact that the author frequently states how the US has taken many criminals and offenders into custody. I believe the article was written to showcase the fact that even there are still crimes going on at the border, the country has gotten very at sniffing out the bad guys and bringing justice to America.
This article is important because it not only updates us about what's going on at the border, it also displays evidence of drug trafficking that can now be controlled more effectively and gives us safety to know that the criminals are caught daily. This document is relevant because it strengthens the country's knowledge of trafficking and supports the official are doing their job and doing it well.
This article relates to the slave trade and human trafficking at the beginning of the United States of America because despite the ban and law against human trafficking and trade, some people still did it. The underground slave trade is still existing today but is luckily being stopped and held under control by authorities. The Civil War was one of the effects of slavery on the population much like border patrol officers are fighting and apprehending those who still participate in any sort of trafficking today.
