Isabella Poscente- Colin Kaepernick Sitting during the National Anthem

Summary:
The quarterback of the San Francisco 49’rs, Colin Kaepernick sat down during the national anthem before their football game. This protest created a lot of controversial between those that felt it was disrespectful and those who understood his statement, of black lives matter and the unjust oppression of black people.

Analysis:
Steve Wyche is the author of the article, the author is also a minority. The author’s point of view is in third person. The article was produced on August 27th on the NFL page. I did not know much about what happened until I read the article. This affects my understanding of the incident because there could be little details that are missing since it could be bias coming from the NFL. This article was written for the public, but mainly football fans and black lives matter supporters. It is a positive influence on the audience because it shows a person “standing” up for what they believe in. This article was written to show the truth of what happened and that the NFL supports both sides of the argument. The point of the article is trying to convey is that any citizen has the right to do whatever they believe in, whether that means they want to sit down during the national anthem to make a statement. The article is important because it is crucial for people to know the truth behind Kaepernick’s reasoning and what he believes in. The conclusion I can draw from this article would be that anybody has a voice, even if that voice is silent. This document is relevant in our lives today because of the black lives matter protests that have been going on. This article is similar to the silent protest in Dallas that happened over the summer. Although nobody was hurt it was still a protest of black lives matter and the oppression of black people. This also relates back to the Civil War when black people were oppressed and were slaves.

  1. Kiri Luckey: I feel that it is very disrespectful to sit during the national anthem, you should always stand to show a form of respect to our flag and the country.

  2. I understand that the National Anthem is a symbol of supporting all the people who have fought for their country, but there are issues here that we must also deal with. It is quite a bold move, but if sitting during the National Anthem is what it takes for people to see that this is something we stand for, then that is the method that must be taken.

  3. I also did this topic, and I too believe that "standing" up for what he believes in is a good influence and strong move. Although, I disagree with his action in the way he is showing disrespect to his / our country.

  4. I for one am glad that I live in country that does not force its people to sing the National Anthem. I think that this whole thing has been blown out of proportion. I believe in an America that earns the respect of its people, not demands it.

  5. I think it was not that big of a deal not to stand. I think what should be focusing on is the hundreds of black men and women who have been killed by the prejudice in this country.
