According to the author Ellyn Shook, chief leadership and human resources officer , suggests that it's an important reminder of how far we still need to achieve gender pay-equity in the workplace. Recently shown in the year of 2015, full time hard working women made 75 to 79 cents for every dollar men made. Also statistics show that Caucasians and Asians make more than African Americans and Hispanics put together, regardless of their gender. Therefore, the million dollar question is "Does race or gender matters more to your paycheck ?" In this article the author discusses about why these things are preventing the U.S from achieving equal pay.

Analysis: I honestly feel as if Americans should be paid on how diligently they perform their occupation, not on gender or race. If America continues to have this mindset there's no telling how corrupted the human mind will be in the future. Many women fought for equal voting rights and now I feel as if we should take a stand on equal pay. Half of the workforce is women and to know you're doing the same as the person who's receiving a higher salary than you isn't right. There needs to be an end of America trivializing Women's Power. http://www.cnbc.com/2016/04/12/on-equal-pay-day-the-gap-is-still-too-wide-commentary.html
I totally agree Ciaja. The amount of money that one should receive needs to be based solely on how hard you work. It is very shocking to know just how drastically gender and ethnicity affects your pay.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your point. The issue isn't totally with direct gender discrimination. The pay gap is also caused by society telling women that they should work in lower paying jobs and men should work in higher paying ones (more female nurse-aestheticians, and more male anesthesiologists), as well as women working fewer payed hours. Women work just as much or even more than men but they don't get payed for this work because it is either 'non billable', or not work related (think housework, childcare, etc.) To make a dent in the pay gap we need to change society's expectations of women in the workforce and make it less stigmatized for men to do more unpaid work. there's a great video about this that can be found here.

Race:
Yes agree completely. And, since discussing your paycheck is taboo in the work place, many women have no idea just how much more their male counterparts are being paid. I also heard about results of a study concluding that interviews may reject an application due to a "ethic sounding"name. The fact that people refuse to acknowledge that these problems exist is a travesty. True change starts with what people believe in their hearts, and with what they teach their children. People need to truly start encouraging women, and empowering them. And as a society we need to recognize that women have worth, and deserve every right and privilege any man has.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. There should definitely be equal pay. It's insane that your pay is based on your race or gender. This topic can go into so many different subjects also.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely! It is not fair at all that they are not giving us equal pay. They should not give on gender more money than the other even though they are doing the same amount of work.
