Ava Noble: US Swimmers Caught in a Lie

WEEK OF AUGUST 29TH BLOG: Ava Noble

Summary:
Ryan Lochte, and three other United States Olympic swimmers, Gunnar Benz, Jimmy Feigen, and Jack Conger, were caught in a lie when police further investigated in what Ryan Lochte said was the truth. To NBC's "Today," Lochte explained how they got pulled over in the taxi, a guy came out with a police badge, and were held to gun point after he refused to get on the ground like they were "told". The police released to the press that they vandalized the restroom while drunk, and the security guards questioned them; they needed to pay for the damage they created in the restroom. They had destroyed the door, soap dispenser, and the mirror. Civil Police Chief Fernando Veloso confirmed, "No robbery was committed against these athletes. They were not convinced of the crimes they claimed." Charges of destruction of property and falsely committing a crime are being considered. Although the US Olympic Committee apologized to the hosts in Rio, many believe Lochte needs to give a sincere apology to all. Ryan Lochte, a 12-time medalist, ruined his reputation in this lie.

Analysis/Synthesis:
On August 19th, CBS released an article, "US Swimmers Could be in Hot Water Over Debunked Robbery Story". CBS has a great reputation of truthful and factual articles, so the public that reads this article most likely will believe what they read. Because this story quickly blew up on all channels of the US news, the US Olympic swimming team has lost a lot of respect. Prior to reading this article, I had already heard all about the lie. My dad had told me earlier that they had been held at gunpoint before the truth came out, so I was shocked to hear they would lie about something so serious. Although a lot of crime occurred in Rio de Janiero during the 2016 Summer Olympics, it was not fair to Rio de Janiero to make it seem like even more crime was happening. This article created a very negative effect on the United States, but especially the United States swimming team. It is an embarrassment to our country. I am hoping these swimmers will learn from this big mistake. They are all so talented; they should do anything they can to save their reputation. I can relate this to President Richard Nixon when he was caught lying about secretly taping the democrats. He was impeached and kicked out of office as the president. This embarrassed himself and the United States.

  1. I completely agree that this mistake made by Ryan Lochte and other Olympians was an embarrassment to our country and the rest of their team. While representing the U.S., they acted immaturely leaving a not so good reputation for themselves not only in Brazil, but in the U.S. as well. The U.S. Olympic Swim Team is admired by so many Americans because of the tremendous title they hold for number of olympic medals. It's so awful to see how that one mistake by people who are so talented and supported, get looked down on by millions of Americans.

  2. I agree with how shameful this mistake was. People who America looks up to as role models should be thinking harder about their choices. Sometimes, people take advantage of having this kind of fame- and use it for lies.

  3. I also agree that this was very dumb of Ryan Lochte. In America we are known for how well our swimmers have suceeded and the fact that this had a bad reputation on our country upset many. This shows us how a mistake of only 4 people can have a big effect. This was very immature of Lochte and he the only reason he did this was to get noticed.

  4. At least nixon resigned from office. What is Lochte going to do besides swim? He'll probably be back next olympics even if team USA says they don't want him back.

  6. I agree that this was a stupid mistake to be made by Lochte, and it brought embarrassment not only to our swim team, but to our country as well. It's a shame his entire reputation has been destroyed over one dumb lie.

  7. I agree that this was completely unnecessary on the part of Ryan Lochte and was a decision that reflected poorly on America as a whole. People from other countries who only hear about that will now have a viewpoint of Americans that is inaccurate based off of the actions of four men.

  8. This is a terrible reflection onto America. If you know you are representing the U.S. to the entire rest of the world, you should be thinking about your actions before you do them.

  9. I love the connection you made! The olympics is the highest glory there is for sports in this world. There a model and standard that is expected from these athletes because it not only looks bad for our country but the whole world is watching were suppose to be "a city on a hill" acording to John Winthrop but this is the complete oppsite.
