Jenna Pitre - "10,000th Syrian Refugee Will Arrive in the U.S. Today"

Summary: Today, August 29, 2016, we accomplished Obama's goal to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees into the U.S., as the 10,000th refugee cam across the border. This article states that the White House hopes to increase that number by a few thousand more for next year, though they face opposition from Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and others, who emphasize the threat of terrorists being among the refugees. Lina Sergie Attar, from the Karam Foundation, a Syrian support organization based in Chicago, said, "I hope that the United States will continue to welcome thousands more Syrian families who are fleeing the brutal war and are determined to rebuild their futures."

Analysis/Synthesis: With the ongoing civil war in Syria, opening up our country to the many fleeing civilians is the least we can do. We've welcomed thousand of refugees, and though the terrorist threat is present, I'm confident in our country's screening abilities. This war has killed hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women, and children, which breaks my heart. I hope that the U.S. continues with their efforts to provide a safe haven for the refugees. This event is similar to the Jewish refugee issue that arose during World War 2 during 1939.

  1. This act that Obama did just warms my heart. We are the United States of America! A country that is supposed to be welcoming and 'the land of the free' meaning we should accept immigrants coming into our country for help and a fresh new start.

  3. I totally agree with you. To be the country that accepts people in need is a country that I would be honored to be in, so it means a lot that Obama is making this effort to accept these refugees.

  4. I am so happy to see that before he leaves the office, Obama is taking steps to allow refuge in our country for people who really do need it. I do hope our country doesn't fall under the hands of a very xenophobic man. I would rather an immigrant "take my job" (major air quotes there) than have to spend another day in Syria where they state complete danger in the face every day...
