A concerned mother was given a citation for causing a public nuisance on Monday, April 28. The crime? A Facebook post. Jeanette Garza Alvarez posted a warning to fellow parents after her son warned her of a possible school shooting at Sierra Middle School in New Mexico. The post read, “Anyone else’s kids go to Sierra? My son says some 8th graders are planning on bringing guns to school maybe Monday and have a shootout to see who’s the first to die.” According to police, Alvarez only made the post to gather information from other parents. About 160 students skipped school the following Monday. Police said that, “Her concern for her son’s safety and for other student’s safety was certainly understandable, but what should have been done was to call the school, call the police department, let them know what she had heard.” Alvarez wasn’t given any jail time, but she must pay $29 in court fees. Alvarez’s concern is not surprising, considering the number of school shootings which have occurred in the past few years. It is important to understand the situation from a parent’s point of view.
