Summary:
Scientists announced Monday that they discovered 3 planets with earth like qualities orbiting a nearby star. Unlike other discovered planets, these 3 in particular are said to sustain water and even life. The sizes and atmospheric temperatures of these planets seem to be the best so far in outer search for life outside of the solar system. Now taking into account that our galaxy stretches for 100,000 light years, the cluster of these 3 planets seems to only be around 40 light years, which seems like a doable journey of that size in reasonable amount of time. With that said, will we one day live on other planets? It looks like we have come one step closer to achieving that goal.
Analysis:
I think with any type of thought of space travel to other planets there is always going to be pros and cons. To start off with, the thought that one day our earth may become overpopulated prompts the desire to find new, habitable space where life can be sustained. Under the ocean? Maybe! But if there are other planets out there that show promising living conditions, then that indeed may be our best bet. Now on the other hand, one con would be the disputes and fights that would ensue if we did seek population on other planets. Who would be allowed? Would these planets be just for America? Would we create brand new countries and territories on these planets, disassociating ourselves from Earth completely? How will we transport goods and materials from each planet? What kind of society will the new planets take? How will we ensure the environmental safety of the people living on these new planets? With these and so many more questions that would be brought up, it almost seems impossible to even think of pursuing such a big task as this, especially when we cant even get our sh*t together down here on Earth!!! Although this event and topic is relatively new, it can in a way be compared to when Neil Armstrong, became the first man to walk on the moon, and when the Sputnik showed that space travel was possible.

ReplyDeleteThis is so fascinating, and you bring up some good points about debates that come with new inhabitable planets.
