Potential Vikings site in North America spotted from space - Erin O'Day

Satellite Infrared Imaging recently discovered an area in Southwest Newfoundland that could possibly be the remains of an ancient Norse settlement, making it the second Norse settlement to be found in North America. What makes archaeologists think it could be a Norse settlement and not just a Native American one is the evidence of iron ore in the area having been mined and refined, a process that was seen in the other Norse settlement and has never been seen in a Native American one before. A team of archaeologists will go there this summer to further investigate it.

I love archaeology and I always think it's super interesting when something new is discovered. It shows that what we know about history is never set in stone; new evidence might turn up that can change what we thought happened. This relates to US history because many people are probably unaware that Columbus wasn't the first person form Europe that came to America. Almost 500 years earlier, Viking expeditions came to and settled America.

  3. We need to stop teaching about Columbus and just say the Vikings found America and all Columbus did was kill natives and start the atlantic slave trade.
