North Carolina Now Just Slightly Less Transphobic- Carlos Joglar

While Republican Governor Pat McCrory now includes sexual orientation and gender identity in the equal employment opportunity policy, there is still obvious discrimination against transgender people. Tuesday, there was an active attempt to remove a law that negatively target members of the transgender community. However, rather than eradicating it, it was simply "expanded". Is it less targeted? Yes, but the key word is "less". One of the policy's most controversial points is still in place. It states that transgender people must use bathrooms that correlate to the gender on their birth certificate. The first passing of the law saw immediate backlash, including refusal to film in the states by Hollywood companies and the dropping of an investment plan of millions of dollars by PayPal.

It is interesting to see that once we think we have resolved a civil rights issue, another one springs up out of the open. But, have we really resolved any civil rights issues? On average, women still get paid less than men. Almost every traceable minority in the United States is at a disadvantage under white, heterosexual, cisgender people, be it economically, politically, socially, and other factions. Yes, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a milestone for African Americans, but racism is still alive and real. New laws to help minorities, yes, but what really needs to change American culture.
