Texas Rep. Michael McCaul is the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. He publicly stated that he was worried that the visit of the pope to the U.S. might present threats to his safety. He went on ABC's "This Week" and said "I'm concerned. I was briefed by the Secret Service in a classified
setting. The pope is a very — I'm Catholic, by the way — he is a very
passionate man. He likes to get out with the people. And with that comes
a large security risk."
After that interview, other security officials have said that they are going to keep a close eye on the Pope while traveling to the U.S. There was one unnamed threat against the pope, which sparked questions and worry in few.
This article was written by Scott Neuman, writer for NPR News. It was was published today at 4:18. From the looks of it It didn't look like he was biased towards any side of the story which didn't affect the article. That's one of the reasons that I especially like NPR's stories because most of the time they don't twist the article to make one side sound better than the other. Pope Francis is well known for his interaction with the people and likes to be close to the people and feels close to them. The pope usually rides in what called the Popemobile. This is a vehicle that has a bulletproof glass box on the back made for the Pope to stand in. Pope Francis refused to ride in it and is overall not worried about security. That's one of the reasons that people especially love him, because he isn't afraid to interact with the people. I believe that they should continue to let the pope travel where he wants to, but just keep a very close eye on him in case anything happens because after all his life is very important!

It's crazy that we have to even worry about security and that everyone can't be peaceful. I agree with you though, they shouldn't keep the pope from interacting with everyone but just keep a watch out for him.
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty sad that we have to consider security for our pope. But, I am glad that precautions are being taken and that the pope is protected. I do hope that he doesn't make any changes to his interactions with people.
ReplyDeleteI think that this topic is very interesting, and I find it even more interesting that the Pope is not worried about security. He has a large platform for influence in the world, so I would imagine that the safety of him would be a large priority as well. -Nicole Chatham 6th period
ReplyDeleteFirst off I totally agree with you on NPR there the only non-biased news source. They don't care about ratings. They give you the news without twisting it into something it's not like other news networks. I have my own opinion and it's not the news's job to sway my opinions. There supposed to lay out the facts and allow me to make my own informed decision. Second every since he was chosen as the pope he has been at risk because of his hands on personal approach to his job. Which is why I along with so many others adore him. I think that yes they need to be cautious which means his security surrounding public appearance should be as detailed as possible but should be ready to change plans cause he will go out and do something unexpected which is why he is loved. Protect him but don't try to contain him.
