Summary: We usually hear Republicans talk about Ronald
Reagan as if he was the epitome of Conservative ideology and they quote him
ceaselessly. President Obama and Hillary Clinton also have quoted and invoked
the name of the 40th president, but for different reasons. If we look back at President Reagan’s time as
Governor of California, he wasn’t as conservative as some might think. During his tenure, Reagan passed environmental
laws to protect Californian wildlife, granted amnesty to 3 million undocumented
citizens, and even signed an abortion law. During his presidency, although he
challenged the Soviet Union, slashed taxes, and gutted mental health funding,
he also raised debt, retreated from Lebanon when terrorists killed 248 US
marines, and tried to negotiate with the Soviet Union. What most people forget
about Ronald Reagan is that he was a pragmatic, complex, and by today’s
standards, a mostly moderate president. Modern day Republicans need to embrace
him as the president he was and not cherry-pick his more conservative aspects.
Synopsis: I found this article interesting because I always
thought that Reagan was the most conservative president who ever held office.
It’s interesting to hear that he wasn’t just that. It’s also strange that,
after he died, he was molded into this conservative talisman. He should be
known as the complex person that he was and not just this Ronald Reagan
persona. It seems like the Republicans are trying to convince people that Reagan
was the ultimate conservative, when they should be embracing his moderate
political stance.
