Many cities in Texas have been rapidly growing in size but one in particular, Houston, is "poised to pass Chicago as the third biggest city in the United States in the next decade". It is fueled by the energy industry that provided the backbone of the economy, and many people are moving there in search of jobs and for the low taxes. It's political views "have been drifting to the left, diversity is being embraced", and now more than 90 different languages are being spoken there.
This is just like colonial America where people were traveling around in search of jobs/ the best life possible for them and their families. It is predicted that Houston will have 2.5-2.7 million people by 2025, which worries me because I don't want there to become a problem with overpopulation and not enough job opportunities. Already, Houston "growth, coming with few zoning restrictions and a loose regulatory system in Texas, has led to persistent problems in air quality and traffic congestion" which can only get worse with more and more people flocking to Houston.

Wow, I knew Houston was big but had no idea it was going to pass Chicago! It makes sense though, everything is bigger in Texas so we should have one of our cities in the top 3 !
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting, although it makes sense that Houston would grow. But what about Austin? And here I thought Dallas was big...
ReplyDeleteThe suburbs are where it's at. (Not really. There's nothing to do.)
