Taytum Buford(Period 6)-Man Shoots at Church in Alabama

Summary: On September 20, 2015 in East Selma, Alabama, a shooting occurred. This unfortunate event took place at East Oasis Tabernacle Church. A man, now identified as James Junior Minter, is being held in jail without bond for the murder of his girlfriend, his 1-month year old son, and the 61-year-old pastor, identified as Earl Carswell. The motive behind the accused man's actions has been released to the press as of 6:30 pm today. The 26-year-old is said to have been having problems with his girlfriend as the have a had a recent breakup and are fighting over visitation issues of their child. After Minter shot his three victims, the members of the church managed to tackle and retrieve his gun, but Minter soon ran off. The police caught him in a mile radius of the church and arrested him. His girlfriend was shot in the jaw and shoulder while the infant was shot in the hand. They were soon rushed to the hospital and are in stable condition. However the pastor, lost a lot of blood after being shot in the leg and was rushed to the emergency room. He is now in stable condition as well. Police are still investigating the situation, but as of now, Minter is being arrested with three attempted murders and possibly a violation of a protective order.
Analysis: I think Minter is obviously sick and crazy, but at least in this attempted murder he had a motive. A lot of victims in murders aren't being targeted for any specific reason, just because they might have looked like someone(#criminalminds). This relates back to another shooting in Maryland, Illinois in 2009 where a man shot the pastor and his bible for the reason of he didn't like the "liberal teachings". Both of these events have a motive, which is rare. Almost all of my blogs are about shootings, but that is the sad thing. There shouldn't be THIS many shootings that I could write about this for the rest of the year. It is sad and unfortunate that these events have to occur so often that I could write a novel. The government HAS to get on this issue.

  1. I find news like this to be very upsetting and alarming. It is so sad that this man would turn to violence like this over an argument, as opposed to handling it reasonably and logically. The three people who had been shot and are now in stable condition are very lucky to be alive! -Nicole Chatham 6th period

  2. I agree with you, there shouldn't be this many shootings happening! What would lead this guy to try to kill his one month old son? I don't understand people who even have the motive to kill someone.

  3. I agree with you, I am alarmed how someone could have mine set to be able to kill someone and I don't know how to go through with it especially when it involves killing his own son only one month old. There must've been something in this man's mind that wasn't right at all I feel this way just in the past year.

  4. I also agree with you, the fact that there are multiple stories weekly about events that share similarities to this is completely ridiculous and alarming. What is going on to where people feel the need to reach for the gun or any weapon at that when they are having a problem in their lives?
