Special Needs Student was Found Dead on School Bus

A special needs student was found dead in a school bus and parents say he was left there all day.19 year old Hun-Joon-Lee was utistic and mute, his parents contacted the school when he had not returned to school arounf his normal time of 3:30 pm. According to the reports officials went to the bus yard and found him unconcious and slumped to the side. He had bee left there for 9 hours.Lee attended school in the Whittier School District and they refused to acknowledge id he was in classs that day.
The bus reached tempuratures of about 120-130 degrees and he didn't have any source of hydration. The late teen's sister Ellen says "My family is completely torn apart and heartbroken, knowing what he had felt during those painful hours". The school district is still investigating this whole situation tryin to figure out how something like this could've happened. It's truly sad that yjis poor teen had to undergo this tragey. Bus drivers are supposed to check the buses before and after the pickup of the students. I feel that the bus drivers as well as the bus yard should be investigated because there is no way he should've been left on this hot bus for s long. Families trust these bus drivers with the lives of their childen. That's every parents nightmare, having your child who you love so much get ona bus to a safe place and they never come back.
In conclusion I do send my condolences to the victims family. I think a new setof bus rules and protoal for yhe drivers should be set up to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.

  1. If only the bus driver would have checked, then there would be a different story.Parents send their children trusting the school to take care of them but then this happens..no wonder so many people have trust issues.- mariela lomeli

  2. Emma Eefting-I agree with the new set of bus rules bus drivers should not be allowed to walk out of their bus without checking to ensure no student is left.

  5. That is not okay. This should have NEVER happened. The article states that he was autistic and mute, not one disability but two. Since this person had this, it should be common sense to make sure he is alright because a non-disable person would have found a way to call for help. An autistic and mute person are severely limited. I understand this family's pain, i hope they find justice to what has happened.

  6. This is not okay, no child should be at risk of anything when being trusted in the school transportation system they differently need new bus rules and the drivers need to have checking throughout their routes on all children.

  8. I cannot believe this!! Bus drivers are under a code where they are required to check the bus before they leave. I think that there should be a bus aid also to help do the post drop off procedures. This is so sad.

  9. I happened to read an article about this as well, the article I read they claimed the Bus Driver a substitute and that there were only three other students riding the bus. This is such a tragic event, that is sure to not only change the life of the boy's family but also the life of the negligent bus driver.

  11. Tristin Manus 8th- The neglect here shows how the negligence of bus drivers can lead to tragedies. I truly believe that we need to enforce more safety and rules on buses and security. To me, I was terrified to ride on school buses because of bullying, the hot temperature , crowded spaces AND no seat belts!! I feel so sad for this boy but this could have been prevented if the bus driver was way more aware of his students and temperature.

  12. This particular post has the most comments I've ever seen. And for a good reason. For people to be as careless as this is an outrage. Bus drivers should be alerted of special needs students even if they are a sub. And they should make sure that every student gets to where they need to be. Not just special needs kids. The fact that this happened shows that the bus system in that district needs to be investigated thoroughly. -Heather Hatch 8th period.

  13. There doesn't need to be a new set of rules for the bus drivers. The district just has to do a better job in enforcing them and pay better attention to the lives that are in their hands.

  14. As a bus driver to a special needs child, that child need to be one of your prorieties. The boy was also mute making it all the more important. He couldn't communicate for himself and need the bus driver to help him. I really want to know what this bus driver was thinking or doing that made them so truly distracted that the left a kid be a killed. -Kiyanna Elliott

  15. I agree with everyone else that the rules should be enforced and taken more seriously. Especially if you know you have a special needs child on your bus, who cannot communicate with you or anyone else. I send out my condolences to this family, so sad to hear. -Carli Copell, Period. 6

  16. Wow this is just wrong. These rules need to be taken more seriously. Make assigned seats, or do something that will stop this. The parents need to teach their children how to act. -Kayleigh Smerud
