Reagan Rees Period 5

There has been much dissension lately in the vatican. Pope Francis is becoming more accepting of liberal ideas, such as divorce and same sex marriage. Many other church officials strongly disagree with this movement. The catholic church has always stood against this, had laws against these things, shamed these things, so why should they accept them now?  Raymond Burke is especially bitter about it, considering he was just demoted by Francis. He says he wants to "resist" the liberal movements and we must be careful and watch the power of the pope.

Francis is simply being more attentive to the liberal viewed church leaders. He told all at a church gathering "let no one say, "this you cannot say'" But Burke reminds us that the pope does not have absolute power, and we must be careful of the laws that he makes. They must be in alignment with the classic church doctrine.

Some are saying that this is what Francis wants. He wants to bring these topics up for discussion, but he has not taken a stand on either side. He is most likely just bringing these issues up to the churches attention so that they can make a decision on what to do on these specific issues, as a group.

  1. It is important that these issues are discussed now, in this the age of transition toward harmony and understanding. I feel that these issues are too big to ignore and that he is right to bring them up. The fact that he has not taken a side is even better, it shows his commitment to bringing up the issues without causing tons of controversy. He is just being smart.

  2. I think the pope is great and the fact that he asking everyone what they think is great! it is great that the pope gets other peoples opinions before making a decision! he truly cares!

  3. I appreciate you discussing issues that are happening outside America. I also like how you included rhetorical questions in order to help your reader think rather than just reading your current event like a news article. This issue is definitely a hot topic right now and definitely one that needs to be discussed. I personally love that Pope Francis is becoming more accepting and it sounds like you do too!
