Pope Francis Calls on Europe’s Catholics to Shelter Refugees By Shara Jeyarajah 8th period

Recently, Pope Francis announced that Catholics in Europe are called upon by the Bible to house refugees, referring to a verse saying not to leave anyone behind, even the littlest of people. He continued, saying that “every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary in Europe [should] host a family.” Pope Francis is known for his charity towards immigrants. He has denounced people that call themselves Christians, but are disinterested towards the thousands of passings that occur in their wealthy countries.  The large amounts of refugee deaths, whether on the boat or in their new home, are far too common to be so unknown. Just last week, several Libyan immigrants had washed ashore, and volunteers were forced to pick up the lifeless bodies. Most every participant was not emotionally equipped to do this deed. This shows the ignorance of countries' refugee policies- they turn their head to the thousands of lives stolen right under their nose. Poor Francis has exemplified the true meaning of religion- helping people, fellowship, showing your faith through what one does rather then what one says. John Winthrop preached similarly to how Pope Francis preaches, but the biggest difference is that the Pope follows through. John Winthrop claimed many things, but at the end of the day, his goal was never to be a good Christian, but to seem like a good Christian leader. John Cotton was probably the closest to what a good leader should be, preaching on his opinions, always based on the Word of God. He probably would have agreed with Pope Francis's advice, knowing that the Pope has theological evidence to back himself up.
