This article is about the murder of a policeman, Deputy
Darren Goforth. and how killings of police relate to the “#BlackLivesMatter”
movement. It suggests that we are paying too much attention to black people
being killed, and that the people angry about the murders of innocent black men
are leading to murders of innocent policemen.
I strongly
disagree with this article for a number of reasons. Although it’s about a
current event (the murder of Deputy Darren Goforth) it’s also an opinion
piece. Of course I think that any kind
of murder is terrible and shouldn’t be happening, but it is ridiculous to say,
as the article does, that the reason for the murder is the Black Lives Matter
movement. The article states that 23 policemen have been killed this year. The
number of black men killed is in the hundreds. The article claims that people
are angry at policemen based on “a few bad seeds”. Hundreds of unarmed black
people are shot by police, and get away with it. That’s not “a few bad seeds”,
it’s systematic racism.
No one
should be dying at all, and it’s very sad that a policemen died, but it is
disrespectful and offensive to blame the death on a movement bringing awareness
to a terrible situation in America and to not recognize that people are being
systematically killed just for being black!

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I feel like the death of the police officers is a hopeless cry for help. It sucks that we have to take it out on police officers, that may, or may not be innocent, but this is just how it is happening. I wish the law enforcement would just handle things fairly and we wouldn't have to see innocent police victims suffer, like our fellow black American citizens.
I agree with the fact that our police should not be targeted for this. They are here to protect us and they should not be targeted for that! However, at the same time, the innocent killing of African Americans does hint at racism.
ReplyDeleteThis is sad. One one hand, black people (or anyone else) should be pesecuted and if a police officer unjustily kills someone try should be arrested. On the other hand a police officer shouldn't be killed for being an officer, their there to protect us and the world would be a lot less safe without them. (Sigh) this is disappointing

I believe that all lives matter no matter what the color of your skin is or wether you are a police officer or not. Which is why the whole #blacklivesmatter thing is so rediculous to me, what about #asianlivesmatter or #indianlivesmatter? Also on the idea of police being killed, just because someone has the same occupation as someone who had done unjust things shouldn't make them any more of a target or their death any less of a tragedy. -Emily Eppig 8th period
ReplyDeleteI believe that all lives matter as well, however that isn't the issue being addressed by the #blacklivesmatter movement. The black lives matter hashtag is not intended to minimize the importance of any other race, but rather to bring much needed awareness to the unjust killing of black people by law enforcement. The movement isn't meant to imply that only black lives matter, it is meant to say that black lives matter too.
DeleteI agree and disagree, I understand that their have been innocent muders of black people, mainly men, recently, but like the article says policemen are being murdered too. I feel like there is prejudice, racism and revenge efforts on both sides sometimes, but murder is murder and it needs to stop! Also think about this, yes we hear about cold blooded murders by police every once in a while, but thats it. Think about how many hundreds and thousands of other police run ins people have that go successful, with nobody killed or injured. But do we ever hear about this on the news? No. So really the ratio of successful police stops to police murder cases out number them alot.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with what you are saying! It is terrible that innocent police men are dying, but it is so sad that they are blaming it on people who are trying to raise awareness of certain police men's racism. All deaths are tragic but to pay more attention to the few policemens deaths rather than the hundreds of black people who died because of their skin color is crazy! I am completely unimpressed with some people's views on the matter. :/
Yeah, police lives matter and all but Twelve doesn't need my help like my little brother does or my homeboys do. I'm not about to go out my way to make sure a a that's strapped up 100% of the day has his safety taken into account like a black kid who "fits a description".
ReplyDeletePolice violence is a thing. I'm not trying to say it isn't. But what I am trying to say is that, while of course the #blacklivesmatter movement did not directly lead to the death of this policeman, I feel that it cannot be denied that the movement has generated an unwarranted amount of animosity towards the law enforcement. Yes, the shootings of innocent black people is extremely unjust and I am in no way trying to minimize that. It's just that because of all the protests and the press this issue is getting, people are living in fear of the police, leading to more people responding violently towards them whether they are innocent or not.
