Summary: Soon after Saint Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church announced that it was merging with the Our Lady of Fatima Parish down the road, this message was left on the back of a check in the offering basket: "No more Spanish in the bulletin. Tell them to speak English." Msgr. Edward Deliman, the leader of the Saint Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church, says that its going to take awhile for these people to get used to the merging. The parishes are slowly integrating themselves. This summer, they began having Sunday Mass together. A Spanish Saturday Mass and special ceremonies are still being held at Fatima currently. Experts say that lots of tension and misunderstanding is common when merging two parishes together. They also say that for two parishes to merge without too much friction, it would take five years. Their new message that they are trying to get the people to accept and understand is that they are all "United in Christ."
Analysis: Religion and their practices are always changing. I find it interesting and quite shocking that someone would say that the other church must learn English. Why shouldn't the other church then tell them that they have to learn Spanish? Different churches always seem to think that they are doing things the "right way" and that everybody else is wrong and they don't want to associate with them. Like in colonial America when the Puritans came to America to escape religious persecution and the Church of England that they believed was fully corrupt.

Religion is always changing. If you don't change, then there is no hope for a better practice (Bella Di Fazio pd: 8)

ReplyDeleteI hope the churches intolerance for language does not predict a future of not being able to compromise.
