President Obama nominates first openly gay Army secretaryOn Friday, September 18, the White House announced they would be nominating Eric Fanning for Army secretary. If chosen, he will be the first openly gay secretary of a military branch. Previously, Eric Fanning served chief of staff for Ash Carter, who is Defense Secretary. John McHugh, the current Army secretary, will be leaving by November 1 after six years of serving. President Obama said in a statement that,"Eric brings many years of proven experience and exceptional leadership to this new role..." McHugh also had nothing but great things to say about Fanning. In April 2013, Fanning became Air Force undersecretary. Before that he was involved in the Navy as deputy undersecretary. If Fanning is confirmed as Army secretary, he will be working alongside a few new staff members, including a new chief of staff.
I appreciate this article because it shows that we've become almost completely gender and color blind when it comes to choosing people for the right jobs. Mr. President is setting an excellent example by choosing people based on their talents rather than they're sexual preferences or orientations. I personally don't know much about the Army the job of Army secretary, however Eric Fanning's background (more in the article) sounds pretty legitimate. I hope if he is confirmed as Army secretary he can prove himself and his talents. It is so exciting to see things like this moving in a positive direction! People are feeling more confident and comfortable about pursue their passion while still being who they are.

It is satisfying to hear that the President is setting this example for our world by hiring Fanning. I know that Obama isn't hiring him just to set an example, he is hiring because of his qualifications and talents, which makes this even better.
