Margaret King 1st period: New York College Cuts Tuition by 42%

Utica College in upstate New York has lowered their tuition price by 42%. Tuition was originally $34,466 but in the fall of 2016 it will drop to $19,996 while room and board will drop 14% from $10,434. The total cost, according to the school, will be $30,430 per year before financial aid. Todd Hutton, the college president, is quoted saying he wants to "remove that barrier and make a college education more than a hope and a prayer."

I find this to be a very important step in the right direction for colleges. Tuition prices have been rising extremely fast and it is one of the main causes for financial hardship in students and adults after graduation. According to CollegeScorecard.com, the average income of students 10 years after graduating from Utica College is $44,700.

  1. Agreed, it's good that they've chosen to reduce their tuition costs. This lessens the chance of students falling into that terrible college debt. It also allows for more people to get education who regularly wouldn't because of their financial needs. -Lia K. 6th

I really love this. These cuts will finally allow people who are smart enough to go to a good college but just can't afford it. It could lead to a renewed interest in furthering one's education, and therefore more intelligent people in the workforce.

i think this is a very generous move that will benefit the students in being able to go to college, and being able to graduate with less/ or no college debt.

  4. I agree. The amount that colleges are charging a year is absolutely ridiculous. We all know they have more than enough money and don't have to charge 60,000 a year. glad to hear there are some colleges taken a step towards the right direction and making it just a little easier on their students. -Carli Copell.
