Kenley Turner 3rd Period- We Have No Idea What Kind Of Cannabis We're Buying

Summary: So now that marijuana is becoming a more recognized, legal cash crop, scientists are trying to dig deeper into what the effects are, and how this plant works. People are comparing the lack of knowledge to if in post prohibition times, America had no idea if alcohol was safe, or what goes into making it. Because scientists are unsure about how this plant works, there is currently few to none regulations on the product being currently sold. Scientists are looking into how to do this to ensure safety.

Analysis: Since the government is not really able to regulate a product to ensure safety, it is most likely not their number one priority. The number one priority is probably money. It is like in colonial times when the tobacco industry caused an economic boom. If colonists were concerned with safety, they would not be selling a crop that caused various health issues and addiction. They just wanted quick money with a crop that was easily grown and would pull them out of an economic hole. In the article, it also made an allusion to the prohibition. During the prohibition alcohol was illegal, just as marijuana is, in many states, illegal. The prohibition was put in place in hopes to reduce crime rates, when in fact, it did the opposite, make them increase. So, maybe it is the same idea: legalizing a something in order to prevent people from doing something illegally.

I agree with you that Marijuana should be legalized to protect United States Citizens from faulty products.
