Julie Shilling 4th Period Current Event: Closing the borders on Immigration.

For centuries, societies have erected walls and fences to separate themselves from their neighbors, from the Great Wall of China through the Berlin Wall and right up to the barrier that today divides Israel from the Palestinians on the West Bank. The United States has debated putting up security barriers of its own along the Southwest border and has spent billions of dollars in recent years.  The U.S. has now fenced one-third of it.  Now, candidate Donald Trump is proposing to go even further, vowing to build a massive, impenetrable wall and a system to detect underground tunnels along the U.S.-Mexico border to keep out illegal migrants.  He says, “Building a wall is easy, and it can be done inexpensively,” the Republican presidential candidate said in an interview. “It’s not even a difficult project if you know what you’re doing.’’  He argues that for many years, Mexico’s leaders have been taking advantage of the United States by using illegal immigration to export their crime and poverty and send those troubles here (as well from other Latin American countries). 

I partially agree with Donald Trump that there should be a huge increase in border protection.  We have masses of people arriving that may not have the best intentions for entering.  We do want to accept families and people who wish to make a better life here, but we need to keep out those that want to cause harm or who do not want to be great American citizens.  We need immigrants who value and want to cherish their experiences here.  We will not know that with borders unchecked or wide open.
