Club drug turned to medical and therapeutical uses. Fernanda Sandoval

MDMA, or more commonly known as molly or ecstasy is a street party drug popular at night long raves, but more recently this drug has been used for thereputical uses for patients diagnosed with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Recent studies have shown that MDMA can serve as a antisthetic for the mind, causing patients to relive their traumatic memories more vividly, and with the help of a therapist. Ecstasy basically releases a high level of serotonin, dopamine, and oxytone, this  makes patients calmer and more trusting and open with their therapists.`
Ecstasy for therapy was discovered in the 70's and 80's in an underground therapy expirement, until it was shut down because of the illegality of the drug.
The testing of ecstasy as a theraputic drug is now in phase 2 of experimentation, and although many experiments fail during this stage, the positive reactions of the patients that are using ecstasy with their therapists leads to the assumption that it will do well in this phase of the testings.
I think its great that we are exploring options for the 75% of people with PTSD that one on one therapy just isnt working for. although this street drug seems an unlikely place to find treatment, as long as it works and is not being abused, i think that its for the best. The one problem i can see in the future if this type of therapy becomes usual, is that people will begin to think that it is fine to use ecsatsy for recreational uses, which its not, and it will be more accesible making it easier for just about anyone to get.

  1. I've heard a lot about this. Apparently with it allows people with PTSD to be able to lose some of their guardedness and explore painful memories they wouldn't be able to touch while sober.
