Caitlynne Simonton "In God We Trust"

A group of police departments in Texas and around the country have placed "In God We Trust" stickers on their police vehicles and it is causing a wide amount of controversy. The motive behind the decals is a "response to recent violence against law enforcement officers" and many are outraged at the idea of breaking the separation of church and state. The officers and police departments have a few differing motives, as some are trying to return to the situation and circumstance of before assaults on government officials began so heavily, others are displaying a sense of patriotism.  Many people feel as if it is disregarding the religions and views of others.. I believe that the law does apply, as it prevents the government from taking a religious standpoint of any kind, despite anyones personal beliefs.

  1. I think it's interesting how this has raised such an uproar when we see, and use, the same phrase everday on our twenty dollar bill. I think that after what is happening to police officials, most recently in Houston, the officers have every right to put whatever they want on thier car, if they believe that it shows they care and matter and are apart of protecting this country.

  2. I believe that the police have the right to add a bumper sticker to their cruiser, as long as they are aware that they are accountable for the sticker. Unfortunately, many people may mistake the officers' faith as a bias, but again, as long as the officers remain accountable, I see no issue.

  4. I have no issue with police officers putting religious bumper stickers on their privately owned vehicles, but police cars are affiliated with the city and its police department. When a police officer puts a personal bumper sticker on a police car it sends the message that the entire police force endorses that belief. Putting a religious bumper sticker on police property is equally as inappropriate as putting a political or any other personal bumper sticker on a police car.

  5. The police officers have a right to put that decal on their squad cars because our country also has a religious toleration. I understand the view point that we should keep the separation of church and state in tacked but I also believe those decals just represent the recent violence to officers and aren't meant to be anything more.

  6. I personally believe that this matter has been taken a little too far, and I agree with Tea that they have a right to put these decals on their squad cars if they so wish.

  7. I think that people are upset just because they want something to be upset about. After all that saying is plastered across the currency we use every day.

  9. Matthew Homsher 9th-It's just a bumper sticker. I'm surprised that some reporter had the confidence to call the police force out on the issue. It must have been a slow news day.
