In this article, CNN discusses the alarming report about the use of antibiotics in the meat and poultry of America's top 25 fast food and "fast casual" restaurant chains. Most top U.S. restaurant chains have no limit to the regular use of antibiotics in their meats. "When livestock producers administer antibiotics routinely to their flocks and herds, bacteria can develop resistance, thrive and even spread to our communities, contributing to the larger problem of antibiotic resistance," the authors in the report wrote. "The worsening epidemic of resistance means that antibiotics may not work when we need them most: when our kids contract a staph infection, or our parents get a life threatening pneumonia." The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that at least 2 million Americans are diagnosed antibiotic-resistant infections every year, and about 23,000 pass from the diseases. This article definitely opened the eyes of the reader about the food we eat everyday. Some of the most popular restaurants scored F's or got no points at all for their food. Although there were several restaurants who failed the report, all have said they were working very hard change their ways for the better. I hope that large number of people affected by the lack of responsibility of our food chains will help make a difference to those who have not been affected.

ReplyDeleteThis is aweful! I never really thought of what was in my food, but I'm becoming more and more aware of what I am eating. The fact that the meat we put in our mouths contains harmful pesticides and can cause resistance to medicines. It's crazy what we put our body through without even knowing.
