On Tuesday evening, September 15th, three-year-old Major Jamari Howard was shot during a drive by shooting in Cleveland Ohio. His mother, Brittney Anderson, was visiting a friend when someone began shooting at the car Major and another one of his mother’s friend’s, Dasha Smith, were in. Major’s father, Freeman says his wife ran to the car as soon as she heard the gunshots. Dasha Smith survived a shot to the leg. But Major, who was shot in the chest, wasn't so lucky. He was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center to undergo surgery, but didn't make it. Officials spoke to Freeman after the incident.
"I just couldn't imagine what he was going through. Speaking to my daughter at the time, afterward she said, 'Daddy, he just laid in my arms, and he looked up at me, and he didn't cry. He didn't do anything. He tried to cry a little bit, but he just wouldn't.' And, that was Major,” Freeman said.
Freeman also sends these words to the shooter, "You have to stand up and be accountable for what you've done. You've taken a life that didn't deserve to be taken.” Police say they have a free leads, but catching the shooter is a work in progress.
Although Major was probably not meant to be a specific target in this shooting, the fact that a three-year-old would become a victim in a senseless act of violence is very upsetting. It’s situations like these that make gun safety policies such a heated topic in political debates.

I cannot imagine what the family of this child must be going through! This is truly a tragedy.

  2. This is truly so awful, I can't even imagine being in that situation. The shooter needs to suck it up and turn himself/herself in, that won't even make a dent in the justice deserved for this little guy. But its something.

  3. This is a terrible act of violence. A three year-old should not have his life taken away from him. This is why there should be a restriction of people being able to have licenses to obtain firearms.

  4. I hope the person who did this was caught! I can't begin to comprehend how the parents are handling this tragedy. Gun safety policies are too loose and should definitely be reconsidered because of incidents like these. - Sophie Kurzius, 8th period

  5. Matthew Homsher 9th- Anybody who is willing to shoot a child deserves to go to jail for a long time. I hope the police will find a way to identify the shooter, so that they can face punishment for what they've done.
