Student Forced to Wear "Shame Suit" for Violating Dress Code-Jazmin Garcia (2nd Period)

http://abcnews.go.com/US/student-forced-wear-shame-suit-dress-code-violation/story?id=25252041

15 year old Miranda Larkin, a sophomore at Oakleaf High School in Florida, was told that her skirt was too short and was to report to the nurse's office where she was told to change into the dress code violation "shame suit." The purpose of this suit is to embarrass other students enough to the point where they won't violate dress code anymore. A spokesman from the district says that students who violate dress code have 3 options: stay in their clothes and stay in mandatory ISS, have someone bring them clothes, or wear the neon shirt with matching sweat pants that say "Dress Code Violator."

What I found wrong with this is that when this happened, it was barely her 3rd day of school because she JUST MOVED from Seattle to Florida. This is a whole new state with new rules. She's not completely aware of the rules. She also said they didn't give her a choice of whether to call her mom or choose ISS. "If you want ISS, you have to ask for it." She didn't know that was a choice, though. They immediately told her to wear the oversized humiliating outfit. Her mom thinks that they didn't give her daughter her full rights and I completely agree with that. The skirt isn't even all that short, either. Her outfit would fit DISD dress code, so I don't see it as problematic. I feel like the school took it too far and they shouldn't make students wear that, it's absolutely humiliating and I don't think that's going to stop students from violating dress code.

  1. Even if she was out of dress code shaming a person, in particular for their body, is incredibly inappropriate. A simple warning or a modesty sweater should have sufficed, this shows it is not about enforcing a standard but making girls feel ashamed about themselves.

  2. No surprise that this is coming from Florida. I hate Florida. But I also hate the fact that women aren't allowed to wear what they want because they might be distracting to boys. Sorry, if you're distracted by a girl's thigh showing, that's your fault, not hers.

  3. No matter how much a school wants to enforce dress code, making students wear this shameful outfit is not acceptable in any way. Also, the girl's outfit is within standard dress code for most schools that allow free dress privileges. The school just took the matter too far.

  4. I think it's completely uncalled for and unacceptable for a school to provide "shame suits" for students to wear. Why did she choose to wear the suit, however?

    1. She didn't get a choice actually. She was only given one option for breaking the dress code and that was to wear the suit.
