Sand Collapses and Kills 9-year old Girl by: Mary Woodward

As a nine year old girl and her siblings were digging a hole in the sand at a Lincoln City, Oregon beach, the sand collapsed on the young girl, killing her. Although an unusual incident, it has taken 2 other lives  this year and proves to be a fatal problem.
The adults nearby heard screams, however thought nothing of it. As the screams continued the recognized the problem and immediately took action. They say the sand kept collapsing back on her and it was extremely difficult to get her out. When rescuers arrived and pulled her out she had been buried for about 5 minutes and was unconscious and not breathing. After rescuers performed CPR she was transported to a hospital and declared dead.
This is really scary to me and i never would have thought something like this could happen. However, i think that if the people on the immediate scene had been better equipped with a plan before hand for an instance like this, the girl could have been rescued quicker and maybe still be alive today.

  1. thats such a horrible way of dying... not being able to breath. like does few seconds right when you run out of breath and you have that moment of anxiety.... its just horrible. i also feel really sad for her parents to loose their baby on like this. (sharon cordon 4th period)

  5. This is very scary because it can happen to anyone at any time, without warning...

  6. This is a pressing issue which appears to have no impactful solution. Its very scary to think that a tragedy of this magnitude could happen to the most innocent of people. (Brett Akop P.5)
