Incarcerated Americans Speak Out in Exclusive Interview Myles Bennett

CNN News got the rare opportunity to talk to three incarcerated Americans held in North Korea. The Korean government contacted the news reporters on the job last minute and told them they would be able to talk to high government officials. When they showed up, they were greeted and escorted to a room with the three detainees. They were given strict guidelines to follow for their interview: ask about treatment, a message to the family, and a message to Washington all in 5 minutes. The representatives of the government made it clear that if they did not follow these strict rules that there would be very serious consequences. The three prisoners said they were all treated well, received medical attention, and would like the US to negotiate the release of themselves and the others with North Korea. The span of their captivity ranges from a few months to almost two years.

Analysis: I don’t think this is a “spur of the moment” decision for North Korea, I think they have been planning this for a long time. I think they told the prisoners to tell the reporters that they wished for the US government to reach out and make contact with North Korea because North Korea is in desperate need of an ally or coconspirator. Their ties with China are weakening and besides China, they have no one. They are looking to build a friendship with the United States and this was their plan of action.
