California's last operating nuclear power plant in Diablo Canyon is to be closed due to not being able to withstand high stress from earthquakes. According to experts, the power plant itself isn't "unsafe", they are just not sure how much stress the reactor can take from the several nearby earthquake faults. The 30 year old nuclear plant is supposed to by produce enough energy for 3 million people annually. While it is unfortunate that people will be losing a lot of energy, it is better than what could possibly happen if it were to stay running. Everyone remembers the terrible Fukushima Dai-Ichi event that was caused by a magnitude 9 earthquake. If such an event were to happen in California it would be devastating.
It is good to know that there are no more threatening nuclear plants in California. This just goes to show how much safer renewable energy sources are; such as wind turbines. There is no threat of a wind turbine blowing up and causing nuclear fallout. I think it would be much safer to get rid of all threatening nuclear plants and replace them with another safer alternative. http://www.scpr.org/news/2014/08/25/46267/expert-calls-for-closure-of-diablo-canyon-californ/
