President Obama declares that the militant siege there had been in the Iraqi Shi'ite town of Amerli on Sunday. He chose to broaden the role of the U.S. military as a response to the international outcry of the threat towards Amerli's mostly ethnic Turkmen population. The Iraqi security and the Shi'ite militia entered the northern town where the U.S. military carried out air strikes on militant positions, humanitarian airdrops, and delivered emergency supplies to residents.
President Obama justified the military operation as an act to prevent humanitarian catastrophe for many of the Yazidis trapped by the Islamic state militants. He has made this decision under the long standing War Powers Resolution that gives him authorization for temporary military action. Obama has received lots of criticism for seeming indecisive with his actions.
I think that the U.S. should quit interfering so much in foreign affairs especially when we are not asked to. It drains our economy of money.
ReplyDeleteI think that these kind of operations- using US airpower to assist foreign troops- put us in a role of 'big brother' nation with the most guns, and the more they take place, the more involved we get in foreign affairs- until we're too involved to extricate ourselves from the conflict.
