The U. S. government believes that about a dozen Americans have left the United States to join the combat with ISIS. Over 100 Americans have traveled to Syria to fight with rebel groups, but so far, about 12 Americans, some with no prior association with extremism, have taken up arms with ISIS. The FBI has arrested about 5 individuals who have attempted to travel to join ISIS. Apparently, it is pretty easy for foreigners to join ISIS, with over thousands of immigrants from places as far as Britain to Malaysia having joined the ranks. At least one American has joined ISIS for the thrill of warfare.
Stories like this diminish my faith in humanity and add to my ever-growing cynicism.
We have yet to ask ourselves: What have we done as a nation to make people bread and raised on our soil to go against us so extremely?
