5,000 Dogs Killed in China by Fiona Womack 2nd

A city in Yunnan, China has recently put down 4,900 dogs that were carrying the rabies virus. They also successfully treated 100,000. Four people died in August from infected bites brought on by diseased dogs. Activists have all come together to protest this unfair slaughter of innocent doggy lives despite their possibly deadly ailment.
The general safety of the public supersedes, in my opinion, the rights of animals. Unless there is a cost-effective and simple way to inoculate the infected dogs, the government must take drastic measures to ensure the health of the people. Obviously, this is a sensitive issue for animal-rights activists, but I think that the Chinese government was in the right here. I also find it ironic that activists in the states are so infuriated by the situation while PETA has killed nearly 30,000 domesticated animals in the past eleven years. Just a thought.

  1. I was always puzzled by the hypocrisy of PETA and its supporters. You drench fur coats in red paint, but you euthanize millions of HEALTHY, adoptable dogs and cats? Can't… understand… logic… of… these… people…

  2. The ratio of killed dogs to people dead isn't fair. If it isn't cost effective to treat the animals than people should just get their rabies vaccines.

  3. In relation to the ratio between people killed from the dogs versus dogs euthanized, it seems pretty harsh. But once you look at the key phrase "carrying the rabies virus," it appears to be justified.

  4. Wow! Can animal activists seriously get upset over this one? If the dogs have something as deadly as rabies, they need to be put down

  5. It's a really tough decision. I agree, they were in the right. But isn't there a way to treat that virus? I feel like there could have been more done.

  6. Although the dogs had a deadly virus, I'm sure there was away around killing THOUSANDS of animals.

  7. This makes me so upset... I love dogs so much but a rabies break out is also terrifying. I guess with the lack of funds, it is the only logical road to take. But, I agree with Lauren. dogs:humans ratio is highly imbalanced (and the word "highly" is an understatement) -Azra

  9. There might have been different reasons behind the killing of the dogs. The amount money they were going yo waste on the cure for dogs can be used for humans. Viruses are something thats is very dangerous but it is hard to do things like this in this situation.

  10. It's difficult to determine the superseding value of life between a dog and a human. I personally believe that a human's life is more precious than a dog's in most circumstances; however, there can be different circumstances. China was right in what they did because they prevented a possible widespread infection. Clearly, there is no good ending to this conflict, but China was proper in their actions.

  11. I think that is was a tough situation. Me personally I love dogs so hearing about 5, 000 dogs being killed it really made me sad but it was for a good cause. The people in china were just trying to protect themselves.

  12. This is not fair that they are treating dogs like this. The dogs never did anything to them. This process needs to be thought through again. Quentin Noble
