Zoe Williams: Denver Stands Up For Education

On February 11 teachers in Denver, Colorado went on strike for higher pay for the first time in 25 years.  They say the district has been playing a "game" over wages with them for too long and they are done putting up with it.  There's a video going around of East High School students dancing to music in the hallways before they walked out.  Teachers have been forced to move to other districts and even take up second jobs in order to get paid enough to sustain themselves.

My cousins live in Denver and one of them is a junior in high school.  She posted about the strike on her snapchat so I was excited to find an article on it because I knew she was passionate about it.  As a student, I am thankful that these teachers are standing up for a need for higher standards in education.  Our teachers are the people the enable us with the knowledge to survive in the real world.  Doesn't that very fact make them a pivotal role in our growth as a nation?  So why don't their wages reflect that?  Without fair compensation how can we expect the teachers to be able to provide adequately for students?  Oddly enough this shows a relationship to the government shutdown because they were both administrations essentially shut down due to a disagreement having to do with financials.
