The Inhumanity Of Prisons by Maya Davis

Prisoners in the Metropolitan Prison Center in Brooklyn have been left with no heat during the polar vortex. People have been protesting outside for days. Some of the prisoner’s relatives say they haven’t been able to visit them for days. Several lawmakers said that the conditions of the prison were unlivable.

This story enraged me.. I think that prison policies need to be reformed a lot. The state of the prison system is currently inhumane in my opinion. This story reminds me of something that happened in 2014. A Texas Prison had people dying because of overheating. These situations aren’t so uncommon and need to be talked about more.

  2. Although prisons are called "correctional facilities", they focus on punishment rather than rehabilitation. In addition, in order to get money, prisons have to get people in jail. This leads to things like mass incarceration. Prisoners are dehumanized and treated as if they don't need basic necessities, like heat. I could go into so much depth about this, but overall, the prison system is just a mutated version of slavery, and it critically needs reform.
