Ryan Mecca | It’s official: Tennessee welcomes all-girl Boy Scouts of America Troop

Troop 2019 of the Scouts BSA is the first all-girl Boy Scout troop, founded in Tennessee. Many girls grow up watching their brothers become Eagle Scouts, but now they can finally take part in scouting, where they’ll learn leadership and survival skills. Many families felt that the Girl Scouts program was not sufficient for teaching their children the skills that the Boy Scouts are often recognized for and wished to create a better opportunity for their daughters.
After over a century of welcoming boys into their programs, the Boy Scouts of America has created the first girls troop. Though the troop is not co-Ed, this is a huge step in the right direction for increasing gender equality in the U.S. I personally was a Girl Scout, but quit after going on a Boy Scout camp out with my brother where I realized how much more boys got out of their Scout program. This article is directed towards the girls who have the same feelings about being a Scout and hopefully will encourage them to take action towards creating more all-girl Boy Scout troops. The author, Nancy De Gennaro, seems to support the creation of these troops, however I know that many think that the Boy Acouts should remain traditionally all-male. It’s important that people take sides here because the fight for equality in America continues and this is a potentially crucial step.
During the Progressive Era, many groups fought for equality and rights including the working class, African Americans, and women. This article particularly relates to the Women’s Suffrage Movement, as women fought for equal rights to men, particularly the right to vote. Just as the girls were allowed the right to join the Boy Scouts regardless of their gender, Americans were given the right to vote regardless of gender with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920.
