This article is about a teenager, Michelle Carter who sent texts to convince her boyfriend to kill himself. She is now going to jail for 15 months after a Massachusetts judge ruled this week. She is now 22 years old. Back in 2017, she was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 2.5 years in jail with 15 mos. served and the rest suspended. She was allowed to be out of jail why she went through the court appeal process. Her attorneys filed an emergency motion for a stay of sentence, but this was denied. The case began in July 2014 when Conrad Roy III died of carbon monoxide poisoning after he locked himself in his truck. Michelle, who was 17, urged him to get back in the car even after Conrad stated that he didn't want to die. The prosecutors argued that Michelle was reckless and caused his death. This is a very tough case and I feel that Michelle encouraging someone who was in a bad mental state to commit suicide is a horrible and heartless thing to do. I think that it is reckless and shows that she does not have any care for human life. However, I do not feel that it is truly murder, as she was not anywhere near Conrad when he died and he is the one who carried out the actions that caused his death. I feel that she is not a good person and she herself needs to seek treatment or therapy and try to learn to have compassion for people. I think this case is going to be one that will be appealed again to a higher court, as it is such a controversial topic.

I had never heard of this case before and it’s very interesting. There was a popular book a few years ago with a similar storyline—something like Backlash?

It is important to examine how easy it can be to say things over the internet that you would never say in person and how evident that is in this case.
ReplyDeleteEmma Burkey: I have heard about this case in the past and I am not surprised it has been in the court for 2 years. This is a difficult subject and case, but she does need discipline for her horrible actions.
ReplyDeleteHopefully this is a learning lesson for her and she will understand how much words really mean, especially when someone is not in the best emotional state.
ReplyDeleteI think this teenager girl deserves everything she is getting. It's quite clear that she has had some derailing attacks on men before, so after releasing her from jail what did they expect her to do? I think the judge made the right call, even if she didn't necessarily convict the suicide. - Joziah German
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure it should be considered murder, but manslaughter seems fitting. While she didn't kill him, she showed that she didn't care about his life & definitely encouraged him.
ReplyDeleteI hate that things like this are happening. I agree that she is in fact a terrible person and should not be convincing someone to commit suicide.
ReplyDeleteThis is really terrible, I mean if you really "love" a person you wouldn't encourage them to take their own life like she did to her boyfriend. I actually saw the Documentary about this case and I was just Speechless... - Alma Alvarado- Cabrera
