Faith Stevens- 1/3rd Of Ameicans say it is ok to wear blackfacfe

Link can be found here.

One-Third of Americans believe wearing blackface or Halloween is always or sometimes acceptable, according o a pew Research h Center poll done on Monday. the controversy was inspired by a racist picture that surfaced on a medical yearbook school page showing a KKK member in blackface. Out of the Americans surveyed, here are the statistics.

U.S. adults: 34%
Whites: 39%
Blacks: 19%
Hispanics: 28%

Some other interesting facts that found in included:

  • "While 39 percent of white adults believe blackface for Halloween can be acceptable, about 19 percent of black adults and 28 percent of Hispanics do as well.
  • About 41 percent of white adults ages 18 to 29 say blackface is never acceptable — the highest of any age bracket.
  • More Republican or Republican-leaning adults — 40 percent — say wearing another culture's traditional dress for Halloween is "always acceptable," compared with 17 percent of Democratic or Democratic-leaning adults."

Khalid El-Hakim, founded of he Black History 101 Mobil Museum is not surprised, stating that he believes that people who think it is ok do not know the history behind it. Blackface continues o show up- whether it is in fashion or at parties here people appropriate the culture in racist ways. Colleges and classes are beginning to teach their students why this should be questioned and why it is not ok-even though it seems like a no brainer.

"So the challenge is how do we articulate these things, take responsibility and sort of fairly challenge white supremacist culture without alienating people," Added, Kori Garibaldi

I was not surprised at the amount of white people who thought blackface was ok, but I was surprised at he percentage of African Americans who were4. I don't understand d that, and it may be because I myself an d not African American, but it doesn't make sense to me. It also doesn't make sense to me that this is still seen as ok. This is the kind of thing we see in old film, in black and white film, in black and white photographs. Not what you see when you look in a bright colored photo you took with your phone. How, in any state of mind, does that seem ok? It shows how little and how  much we've grown at the same time. We haven't c om e very far in history if we still believe the appropriation of culture4s for the sake of humor is ok.

  1. It makes me very shocked to see how many people truly don't know the proper repercussions of wearing blackface, seeing it almost as a harmless jest or some such. I believe it is important with this matter to not get angry and outright argue with someone with indifferent views towards blackface, instead helping them understand the implications of blackface and the very insensitive and outright cruel past behind it.

  2. For the most part, this just boils down to ignorance. So many people just don't know the history behind blackface, and that's were education comes in to play. It's crucial that schools teach the true history of our country, the good parts and bad. Without that, people will continue to grow up ignorant of their racism.
