Summary:
Michelle Carter was ordered to start serving her sentence for persuading her boyfriend to kill himself in 2014. Carter was 17 years old when Roy, 18, died in July 2014. The case hinged on text messages between the two in which Carter urged Roy to kill himself. Carter listened over the phone as Roy suffocated from carbon monoxide inhalation in his pickup truck and failed to notify his parents or authorities when he died.

Analysis:
Wirtten by Emanuella Grinberg from CNN, and posted at 5:06 PM, Mon February 11, 2019. This case started in 2014 when Roy died and the judge finally sentenced Carter to 15 months in jail in August 2017, but allowed her to remain free while she appealed her conviction. I had no prior knowledge of the incident in 2014 or the on going trial which only shows how long it takes guilty people to be put away.
This most direct connects to the preacher who wanted to claim his wife’s life insurance was sentenced on Friday to 10 years in prison for persuading her to kill herself in what a judge described as an Australian-first conviction. Carter edged Roy the same way for different reasons and is now going to face her time. It seems the author remains neutral but adds an interesting side to this narrative. The adds an excerpt where attorneys believed that the decision stretches the law to assign blame for a tragedy that was not a crime. It has very troubling implications, for free speech, due process, and the exercise of prosecutorial discretion, that should concern us all. The article seems to give an underlying tone of be careful in the new future, especially in the end of this article, because judges are ruling blame to a person that has not "committed" a crime. This tragic story should serve as a wake-up call for kids and teens who tell others to kill themselves. Not only is it a horrible thing to do, but when kids on the receiving end hear this command, some actually go through with it. Michelle was Roy's girlfriend and instead of talking him down from a dangerous place helped him decide when where and how to kill himself. She even got upset with him when he was indecisive about it which is turely messed up and now may be facing 20 years.

  1. It is terrible that this boy listened to her. We should make talking about suicidal and mental illnesses more prominent in today's society.

  2. this is so sad. why would she encourage him to do something that effects so many people besides her such as his family and friends.
