Peyton Gatewood- Oprah Isn't Running — But There Are Plenty Of Black Women Politicians Who Need Our Support

the article

Let’s talk about the fact that Oprah isn’t running, and as many people have pointed out, lots of women are, particularly lots of Black women. We’re only a month removed from Doug Jones’ December Alabama Senate election victory, a win that happened in large part thanks to Black women who voted for him (98 percent of them who cast their ballots were Team Jones, you’ll recall), and people are already forgetting what it means to give actual support to Black women.

Part of that work is electing Black women to office, because there are plenty who have committed to running and many who are in office and need continuous support. California senator Kamala Harris — who people have highlighted as a potential 2020 presidential contender — was just named to the Senate Judiciary Committee; she and Senator Cory Booker became only the second and third Black senators named to that committee in its 201-year existence.

Author and speaker Luvvie Ajayi also made a list of Black women running for office in 2018; almost all of them are Democrats, and many are progressive. Give women like them your dollars, your volunteer time, and your vote.

My Hot Take: As the political buffoonery in our country gains power, my patience wains. Did we forget that Oprah, though a wonderful media proprietor, has no credible experience with politics? Why have we not leaned to cast your vote for legitimate candidates and not celebrities? I mean, do you see the clown in office?
Anyways, let me say this: I LOVE BLACK WOMEN! A lot of kick-ass black girls are making their way up the political ladder. Not only are these women an inspiration to our girls, but a vision of what a Great America could be. No, these women are not only supported because of what they look like- as said in the article, most of them are liberal (and we love our liberals!).

  1. We need to put our full support behind these women so that we can elect a strong, experienced, women of color into the oval office

  2. I'm in full support! The idea that in the 2020 election I might get to cast my vote for a strong woman of color for our nations highest position is incredible.

  3. I love your hot take! But remember to connect this to history. Is there another amazing woman of history that you can compare Oprah to?
