About ten years ago, archaeologists in Jamestown, Virginia discovered a groundwater well used by Jamestown colonists in the early seventeenth century. Its use of drawing water soon transformed to that of a food waste hole by the colonists. These archaeologists have been sampling and studying the remains from the bottom of this well in the hopes of using the changing diet of the colonists to better piece together the more blank spots in Jamestown’s history.

This article demonstrates the modern studies of the first English settlement in North America: Jamestown, Virginia. In order for us to better understand the fluctuations in the prosperity of colonists’ lives, we must take advantage of some factors which were results of these fluctuations, such as what is referred to as the Starving Period for Jamestown people. During this approximated time period, it appears that Jamestown colonists has to resort to much less desirable food sources. I think that this is an important study because if we can’t fully understand or uncover the problems from the start of our nation, how could we hope to synthesize those of today?
