Halloween costume crackdown: Schools ban creepy clown, culturally insensitive outfits//KLARK JOHNSON

Grade schools to major universities are limiting Halloween costumes choices to prevent controversies. Schools have issued warnings against costumes that can come across as inappropriate, publicly incorrect, and culturally insensitive. Last year Tufts University threatened investigations by campus police on students on outfits "relating to tragedy, controversy, or acts of violence". As noted by the University of Texas handed out a 29-point checklist for avoiding offensive costumes.

Comedian Jim Norton wrote in an opinion piece for Time. “This obnoxious undertaking of public shaming is perpetrated by a temperamental culture who engages in it simply to avoid looking at its own inconsistency and ugliness for one more day,". Princeton University has planned a seminar with students to “engage in a dialogue about the impact of cultural appropriation, Halloween, and why culture is not a costume.” I think its good to see how school and society is being more concerned about offensive and insensitive costumes. I hope this brings awareness and reminds everyone that costumes don't have to be offensive to be "funny".

  1. It's good to hear that some schools are not allowing offensive costumes and are putting an end to insensitive behavior but I'm also really glad that I go to a school where people know how to respect one another where we don't need certain restrictions.

  2. There are so many different costumes you could wear, I'm not sure why people resort to offensive costumes. On a slightly different note: what do you think about little girls dressing as cultured princesses? (Mulan, Moana, Pocahontas, etc) I'm really curious to hear your opinion.

  3. Olivia Wall- It is sad to think that some people would wear offensive clothing, and halloween should be a very fun time, rather than a time that causes controversy.

  4. I'm so glad to hear that this is going to be a rule. Every year I see costumes that are offensive and now people can finally face the consequences.

  5. I feel like this limit on Halloween costumes can easily come accross as a little bit confusing...There are so many things that people can be offended by. If schools are going to limit costumes due to them being offensive, they really need to be more specific.

  6. While I get the purpose behind the rules, I don't really agree with them. I think that certain thing should not be allowed but if feel that these laws are too harsh and will limit free speech around an all-around fun holiday.
