A fire fighter new to the station is now fired after making a “ racially insensitive gesture “. It’s very normal for a new firefighter to introduce him self to his new  colleagues by bringing a gift. Though when Robert Pattison brought a watermelon to the station where it was 90% black many of his colleagues took offense. Pattison claimed he didn’t think of it as a joke or a problem but he does regret his action. An apology wasn’t enough for the Detroit fire department and he was sadly fired.

It’s a watermelon for god sake. Watermelon has forever been a stereotype for African Americans but everyone enjoys it. Under the circumstances we are living in I have no clue if Robert made this gesture thinking about race , but either way he shouldn’t have lost his job. I believe suspension should have been enough. It LITERALLY DRIVES ME NUTS that a COP CAN BRUTALLY SHOOT AN AFRICAN AMERICAN ON THE STREET AND GET TOTALLY AWAY WITH IT BUT A MAN BRINGS A WATERMELON TO WORK AND HE LOSES HIS JOB.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME AMERICA. This article should defiantly have a negative effect on the whole audience because I know people who want change don’t want a man to get fired for bringing a watermelon to his job , but want a man to get sent to prison for killing another unarmed man. This article is so important because people need to realize that just because it may look like this is good step , “ they are finally starting to stick up for the blacks “ that’s not what this is. This is just crazy. I can’t even connect this to the past because this is crazy that a man gets fired for bringing a freaking fruit to work.
