Federal Judge Orders Government to Allow Abortion for Undocumented Teen -Sam Blumberg

A 17-year-old girl (her name has been undisclosed) who crossed the border alone last month is fighting for her right to get an abortion in a Texas facility. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, an opponent of abortion rights, argued that people who are illegally in the United States do not have a "constitutional right to an abortion on demand." He says that if the court rules in her favor, many more illegal immigrsnts will follow, making Texas a "sanctuary state for abortions." Rochelle Garza, the girl's lawyer, claims that it "really has nothing to do with her immigration status," and says that "As far as I'm aware, abortion is legal in this country. Nobody has a right to force her to have a child against her will." Judge Tanya S. Chutkan said Wednesday that she was given two choices: Voluntarily go back to the country she fled and have an abortion there, or be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy. Judge Chutkan found this unfair and ordered the government to allow it. I find this whole situation remarkably unfair, it seems like these are two different issues that are being unnecessarily combined.
