Elephants have been used in circus acts for decades and only fairly recently have theses acts been recognized as abusive and dangerous. New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, signed the Elephant Prectection Act into law last week, the act prohibits the use of elephants in any and all performances. Some particularly painful tactics used by elephant trainers include; the forced separation of Elepahnt Calves from their mothers, "teaching" them tricks by stabbing their feet or back with bull hooks, and using ropes to restrain their feet and teach them to lay down on command. The new law is a huge step in the right direction for animal rights, though it will only be in full effect in the next 2 years. A few months prior to this ban, another one was signed that stated no exotic animals may be used in performances. Cuomo, as well as Wayne Pacelle, the president and CEO of he Humane Society of the United Stated, agree that this ban helps pave the way for a better and more humane New York, and eventually United States. Many areas are banning the use of performance Elephants entirely, and hopefully soon animal involved circus acts will be illegal all of the U.S.
I hadn't heard about this, but now that I have I couldn't be happier. I did know that the treatment of the elephants causes them stress and shortens their lifespan, and personally don't think that is ethical or moral.
