Caroline Carter - Crisis in Puerto Rico

Across Puerto Rico, the destruction from Hurricane Maria can be seen in every town. In Toa Baja, people have lived without electricity for months, few gas stations are open, and very few residents have running water. Unfortunately, these are the conditions that most others are living in throughout the island. Recovery has been very slow, and there has been little foreign aid so far. President Trump has repeatedly stated that hurricane relief has been a joint effort between the United States and Puerto Rico, but reports from citizens of Puerto Rico have provided evidence to the contrary. There is still very little food and potable water available to residents. Some have resorted to drinking water out of overflown creeks.

This is very similar to the beginning of World War II when the United States neglected to help their allies in the fight against fascist Germany until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. In this situation, the United States is not doing enough to help our allies and fellow citizens in Puerto Rico, and the neglect may continue until it is too late. I believe that the U.S. should make more of an effort to help Puerto Ricans rather than constantly complaining about the cost of relief efforts. The behavior by our president concerning this issue has been highly unprofessional and I hope that something will change in the near future.

It's such a shame that Trump isn't helping as much as he should. People's lives are at stake. There has been so much devastation it's so frustrating that our leader isn't taking necessary steps. Puerto Rico is even a part of the U.S. and relief isn't being sent.
