Leah Nowell - "Calif. gov signs law to shield Sikh, Muslim students from bullying" - 8th

10/3/16

Summary: California Governor, Jerry Brown, signed new legislation last week aimed at giving students a safer school environment. BILL AB-2845, also know as the "Safe Place to Learn Act," seeks to address bullying of South Asian, Muslim- and Sikh-American students as well as those mistaken to belong to those groups. He enforced this by providing school staff with school-site and community resources as well as require the superintendent of public institution to publish anti-bullying resources related to religious affiliation on its website. This bill is very important to the Muslim and Sikh children because both of the communities have seen a huge rise in bullying of Muslim and perceived to be Muslim students.

Analysis: It makes me super sad that there has to be a bill passed in order for people to not harass people that are a little bit different or don't have the same beliefs. This reminds me of how Hitler treated anyone that wasn't his idea of the "perfect person". He made their lives miserable just because they were different. It just blows my mind that this much time has passed and people still can't accept others.

  1. Even though this is a good step I still think that it is not enough. The only way to totally prevent bullying is to teach children how to be tolerant from a young age.
