Doll Therapy May Help Calm People With Dementia, But It Has Critics - Emma Reyna

Summary:

In this particular news article, published by Npr,  states how people with dementia can ease their anxiety by playing with dolls due to their agitated and aggressive personality from memory loss. An example of a person who is diagnosed with this type of condition and who receives this special type of doll therapy is eighty eight year old Vivian Guzofsky. Vivian lives in a home for seniors in Beverly Hills California where she receives this specific type of treatment. Everyday she goes to visit the pretend nursery where she revives a doll and does everything she would with a real life baby almost as if they were her own grandchildren. She changes the baby's clothes feeds them and gives the baby a nap and sings them lullabys. Although it's not certain if she knows she's playing with a fake doll or believes that the baby is real as long as she's happy and at ease that's all that matters, supporters from her family state. Although there might be skeptical outlooks on this particular way of therapy since the use of a fake baby is sort of absurd in a way all in all I think it's for the greater good.

Analysis:

The viewpoint of this article was very non biased toward neither side since it stated the great ways doll therapy has helped so much with people who have dementia and how people may still be skeptical about this idea by the way it's presented. Before I read this article I did not know about the use of doll therapy and how it was used in a way to cure people with dementia which ultimately leads to Alzimers disease. When I heard about this I was quite intrigued by the process and concept. Before then I only knew of art therapy and the use of medication to heal  such a condition. So when I found out about the overall benefit from this type of therapy I found it amazing and astounding how doing therapy in this distinct, new way can do many wonders.

Synthesis: Doll therapy in particular can be connected or related art therapy which was seen as controversial at first but was later recognized as something very helpful and benefical later on. In conclusion I believe many types of therapys can be helpful in certain aspects, some more than others but as long as it does something great in the end as in relieving and healing people from this condition then why not keeping spreading such practices instead of doubting them.

  1. This is really cool how we can keep advancing science to help those around us suffering or in pain. It makes me happy to see that people are being helped by something as simple as dolls, with real results.
