At the Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor in Michigan, Laura Pasek, an elementary school teacher, wanted to teach her students about the current presidential election. However, she felt that some of the messages the campaign was giving off, as well as the disrespect being showed, was not appropriate to teach the kids. Instead, she is teaching them about elections with the election of 1800 as the model. They will also be holding a school-wide election between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.
This is so cool! The article was written on the 19th, so it's up to date with where we are in the election currently. Before reading it, I myself have definitely seen the uncanny resemblance of our election with the one in 1800. Both have been very, very dirty, with the 2 parties and their heads as strong and inexorable as their past/future counterparts. The article, though on the topic of something very negative in these past few months, is very positive. Those kids are going to get to learn about messy politics without having to be scarred from learning about the current campaign! To me, the article was written to compare the two elections, and show how scarily similar they are. It's important to read because we think of American history as old and irrelevant, but clearly, history repeats itself. This election will certainly go down in history. Obviously, the article can be related to the election of 1800. John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Aaron Burr were going head to head. These 3 guys loom just as large as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. To quote some Hamilton lyrics, "it's lose-lose."

I love the way you ended the article, quoting Hamilton, but yes I agree this teacher had a great idea for those kids!
ReplyDeleteIt's quite sad that the elections these days are so inappropriate that it can't be taught in class. What're they going to do in history books hundreds and hundreds of years from now?
ReplyDeleteI agree, this is such a cool idea and can even be related to what we are focusing on in our classes now, too! I love that kids get some interaction and education regarding how our elections really go. It does say something that they can't talk about what's actually happening in the world right now, though, because this stuff will have a much greater impact on the kids of today. Thanks for sharing!
